Screaming Monkey's top five rules for buying your first "real" bicycle.

***
Rule #1. * Always begin your search at a "real" bicycle shop. Department store or "big box" stores are not real bicycle shops. I cannot stress this fact enough. There is a unique joy one gets while riding a quality bicycle. This unique joy cannot be found on a department store bicycle. Period.
*Wal-Mart, K-mart and Sears do not sell quality bicycles.*
Almost everyone is within driving distance of a authorized bicycle dealership. Whether it's Trek, Giant, Raleigh or another bicycle manufacturer begin your search with a bike shop authorized to sell  a name brand bike. Trek and Giant are probably the most available bikes in the U.S.
*
Rule #2. * Consider and research the type of bicycle that best meets your needs. Comfort bike, mountain bike, touring bike, fitness bike, commuter, etc.
*
Rule #3. * Test ride everything. Usually the perfect bike for you will tell you it's the perfect bike for you, if you listen.
*
Rule #4. *  "Try not to buy more bike than you need while at the same time trying not to buy less bike than you need. Find the right bike for you. Not everyone needs carbon fiber...
*
Rule #5. *  Research sites like Screaming Monkey Bike to see what's available in today's entry-level bicycle market.
